The 1970 Gran Sport Buick

If there was a dream car for automobile racers in the mid-1960s, it had to be the Buick Gran Sport. After all, this sleek car with sporty exterior and powerful engine suited the image of the ‘60s rebel. The Gran Buick, or GS, changed its look over time and soon earned itself a place amidst other American classics.

This car was beloved by speed-racers and with due reason. It boasted faster speed and better performance than any of the other cars on the market. The engine was capable of 25 horsepower and the car itself had a fancy tagline that hinted at lightning fast speed.

While the mid-‘60s to ‘70s was its heyday, it was only towards the end of its popularity that the GS started to make its mark. In fact, the 1970s GS Buick is always on top of the list for any ardent collector. This was because this particular model, also called the GD 455, had some of the most enhancements when compared with earlier version. It was said that the specifications, i.e. 350 hp and 510 ft lbf, was a mellower version of the actual capabilities.

Given their higher performance, it was not surprising that this brand of car also won a number of honorary titles. The GS 455 has been cited by Motor Trend as being faster than any of the other cars they had tried out. A number of racers have tried to test whether this car was one of the fastest cars of its time.
