The Chevelle is made by Chevrolet as a mid-sized automobile manufacturing of this model began in 1964. Built from 1964 through 1977, it was General Motor's most successful car built through those years. It was built to compete with the Pontiac GTO, and the popular Ford Mustang.
The Chevelle, when it was first built, had a 327 V8, and was rated at 300 horse power. It was the biggest engine being built for the Chevelle at the time. This size engine made the Chevelle less desirable than other muscle cars, because the muscle cars where being built with more powerful engines. When the muscle car era peaked, the once mid-sized Chevelle was consider to be one of the muscle cars. In 1970, the Chevelle had the best power options available, which included the LS6 454 cubic inch 450 horse power monster that could run the 1/4 mile in 13 seconds.
Later, Chevrolet came out with Chevelle Super Sport, and it was named as Chevrolet's entry into the muscle car battle. The SS was the high performance version of the Chevelle; it even had its own line of both parts and engine to choose from. This car was Chevrolet's most famous car of all time. It was said to hold its own with the best cars built at that time. The Chevelle was said to have its true muscle car look in 1967 through 1970. For true muscle car fans this car is the one.
