Buick GS As A Muscle Car

The famous Buick GS came out in 1965. The Buick GS series came out as an option of the already existing Buick GS with the idea of a muscle car version added to it. It was considered to be the most formidable muscle car of its time. This is not a surprise as GM was always greatly associated with high performance vehicles.

An interesting fact about the Buick GS is that the whole success of it came from the Pontiac GTO as this highly encouraged Buick to then produce a muscle car of their own. At this point, GM started changing over the engines/transmissions in the cars to turn them into muscle cars and with this the Buick series then shoehorned their existing 401 cubic inch into a full-size car engine with their Skylark to create the Buick Skylark Gran Sport. This Buick car then later became known as the Wildcat 445 in part because its torque rating was rather high and also this Buick engine dated back to the 1950s and was known as the nail head engine due to the size of its valves.

In only its second season, the Buick series came out with the Buick Skylark Gran Sport, which received more power and new styling. The Skylarks had amazing sail panels that extended the rear roofline beyond the back window, while on the other the Grand sports series of Buick were distinguished by blacked out grilles, GS badging, nonfunctional rear-facing hood scoops and simulated front fender vents. This was a great change in the Buick series as the the old 401 engine returned to producing 325 bhp, even though there was a hotter 340 bhp version.
