Muscle cars are renowned for their racing capabilities and no other car lives up to this standard like the Buick Gran Sport (GS). This type was not granted a wide variety of models and yet this small range managed to become a top favorite amongst fans.
The GS made a name for itself in the mid 60s when the Skylark models were released. The Skylark GS was done over from its predecessors with the sole purpose of enhancing its racing features. Thus, it is hardly surprising to find that this model was famous for its sizable engine. The creators pushed the limits with this model, as they opted for the largest engine possible, with 400 cubic inches.
The creators of this beloved brand recognized their niche market and started catering to them. This was seen in the form of pro-racing features like the ones added to Gran 455 Stage I. It had performance enhancing additions like improved valve springs and a better compression ratio. This particular model was also the source of a major debate where car lovers consistently pitted its capabilities against the popular Chrysler Hemi cars. Whether it was a myth or the truth, it certainly helped keep this model in the spotlight.
Then there was the 1970 Buick GSX Stage 1. This was purported to be one of the fastest muscle cars of its time period. Some sources have claimed that it can cover 1/4 of a mile in 13.38 seconds. Its 455 engine is said to be lighter than the weight of other muscle cars. This model continues to be a worthy collectible amongst racing fans and thus, can still be seen at various car shows.
