When you think of a muscle cars one thing that comes to mind is earth shaking raw power. Most people would say a muscle car has a V8 engine made between 1948 and 1972. Before 1948, people called them hot rods, which are in a class all their own. After 1972, what was known as the classic muscle car began to fade away. Gas prices and stronger regulations from the government were to blame for this.
When you sit in a classic muscle car you can feel the power even if the car is just idling. If you push on the gas petal even just a little bit the car starts to vibrate. With brute strength, muscle cars are out to prove they are the best. Most muscle cars started out as family sedans. Then the car manufactures listened to what the public was wanting and came out with the same family sedans, with souped up 7 liter, 428 cubic inch motors with monster horsepower. Cars that come to mind are Mustangs, Challengers, Camaros and the Dodge Charger. They all had the look that said I have power and am not afraid to show it.
Do we have muscle cars being made today? Most car fanatics stand in two camps; one say yes and point to the new mustangs as their proof. The other camp feels only classic muscle cars can be called as such. The new mustangs have the power and the feel of a classic muscle car, but with the modern comforts of today.
Whatever you call a muscle car, it has one thing, a lot of horsepower. They are made for speed and have the look that screams I have power, take notice of me.
