Chevrolet Camaro

The 1967 Camaro was the beast that Chevy built to meet the galloping Ford Mustang head to head. When asked what the word “Camaro” actually meant, Chevy public relations supposedly replied, "It is a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs."

The Mustang eater was unleashed on the public in September of 1966. Chevy made sure this F body platform would trump the popular Mustang, because the Camaro wasn't just a pretty car. It had plenty of power as well. An SS package that included a monster 396 cubic inch mill pushing 375 horsepower and other goodies was available for the horsepower crazed masses. The Camaro could do 0 to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds and trip the lights at 100 mph in 14.5 seconds.

The Camaro was also available with a variety of smaller engines that included the popular 327 mill and the more powerful 350 cubic inch model for people that were looking for style and speed as opposed to the SS 396 street thumper model. The first generation F-body Camaros lasted through the 1969 model year. The most popular Camaro ever produced was in all probability the 1969 Z-28; this package included a special 302 cubic inch mill that produced a whopping 400 horsepower, special suspension and handling package, wide rims with performance tires, low restriction exhausts and custom Z-28 paint. The $458 price tag of the Z-28 option pushed the vehicle's price to around $3,200 dollars.

The Camaro lasted through four generations of modifications, with its final model originally rolling off the assembly line in 2002. In 2009, Chevy released the new 2010 Camaro, which takes its retro styling from the iconic 1969 Z-28 muscle car.
