The Chevy Chevelle

In 1970 the General Motors Chevy Division released the Chevelle SS. The 1970 Chevelle LS5 was rated at 360 horsepower and the Chevelle LS6 was rated at 450 horsepower which is rare. The LS6 SS option was available for the 1970 Corvette and the 1970 El Camino.

The Chevelle SS could be identified by its Cowl Induction and wide racing stripes running down the hood and the rear deck. The Cowl Induction feeds air into the engine. The LS6 option came with a Holley four-barrel atop an aluminum manifold, solid lifters, four-bolt mains, forged steel crank and connecting rods, and forged aluminum pistons. With these options the Chevelle SS was a standout as one of the best muscle cars.

In the 70’s there were dealerships that did conversions to these cars that made them even better, and helped create the Chevelle SS legend. Those dealerships were Scuncio Chevrolet in Greenville, RI, Yenko Chevrolet in Canonsburg, PA, Nickey Chevrolet in Chicago, Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Mi, Fred Gibb Chevrolet in La Harpe, IL, and Dana Chevrolet in South Gate, Ca.

The Chevy Chevelle is still considered a classic muscle car by car enthusiasts. Many say that cars being produced today are just not the same in appearance or performance as the great looking muscle cars of the 60's and 70's. It is rare to see a car today that sports the classic racing stripes running down the hood and rear deck.
