The Muscle Cars of 1975

The muscle car boom exploded in the 60s, and carried on into the late 70s. The year 1975 brought unique differences from the three major automakers of America.

By far, one of the most popular muscle cars was the GTO. A new sport coupe model came about from an east coast Pontiac dealer. It was a new concept car that carried the 400 or 455 CID engine. It was much sportier with a four barrel carburetor, custom bucket seats, rally wheels, and raised white letter tires. There were other accessories besides these.

Another muscle car that pushed the envelope was the Plymouth Road Runner. The 318 engine was still standard, but a 400 CID engine was now available with dual exhaust and four barrel. A more powerful engine was released, but was limited to police cars only, the 440. Rumors state some were in street cars, but the 318 was still the primary engine of choice.

An offspring of the Chrysler Cordoba, the Dodge Charger SE was the sole model for 1975. As like the Road Runner, it offered a 318 or 400 inch big block V-8 engine.

Last but not least, Dodge decided to come out with a variety of new entries in the muscle car category. There were 8 different models in this class, and they consisted of the dart swinger, sport, custom, and special edition. Each had their own variety of amenities. Engine sizes varied from a slant six to a 360 CID. The car bodies had also been made stronger per stricter safety standards.
