Wow, talk about your muscle car powerhouse. Not much beats a 1970 Buick Gran Sport with a 455 cubic inch monster motor stuffed under the hood. It was tagged as the as the fastest production muscle car ever tested by the outstanding car magazine “Motor Trend.” This tire smoker could satisfy most folk’s need for speed in a big way. The gargantuan 455 cubic inch mill pushed the 425 horsepower envelope with a torque rating of 510 pounds. However, GM rated it at a meager 360 horsepower for insurance reasons, but it was truly a brute to be reckoned with on the mean streets of the muscle car era.
The Gran Sport Stage 1 could do the 1320 in about 13.5 seconds and it could pin you to the seat with a zero to 60 time of 5.5 seconds. Impressive numbers for a bulky 3,800-pound street beast operated by a factory Hurst shifter and a single Rochester quadrajet four barrel, which pushed the fuel to the 455 Stage 1 mammoth mill. This awesome power heavy automobile could be had for around $4,000 ,with the GSX Stage 1 package tacking on about $1,200 to the final retail price.
The package included a high performance cam, big valves, disc brakes, heavy-duty suspension package, dual exhausts, G60 15 tires mounted on wide factory mag style wheels and a special paint scheme of either yellow or white with special GSX decals. This car definitely followed the muscle car era mantra of “There is no replacement for displacement." The 1970 455 Buick Gran Sport GSX sang Buick's swan song of the muscle car‘s golden epoch thanks to government emissions and insurance regulations.
